Conference 29/30 Nov > Biofuels Seminar
International Scientific Seminar on oil production and oil transformation into biofuels - 30th of November

The “OLEASILVA” Network is for small scale production and use of vegetable oil (eg from Jatropha, Ricinus in semi arid conditions and from small scale palm oil plantations).

“This seminar was a good opportunity to meet a about ten actors interested and really involved in this area (with oil production from ricinus, Jatropha, oil palms etc). Dialogue was opened with the largest ricinus oil plant in the State of Bahia located in Salvador that was visited during the event. Some oil palm plantations at the Costa de Dende, near Salvador were also visited. It was underlined that more research is needed before the production of such vegetable oil in semi arid conditions can be recommended. It has also been decided to establish a directory of scientists and technicians really involved in this area and to launch, on a voluntary basis, a network of experimental plots to really determine yields under various ecological conditions and different provenance of seeds. This has been considered as a major issue, as too often very unrealistic yields data are indicated by inexperienced actors. This will be followed by two other seminars of the same kind, one in India in February and another in the Netherlands in March 2007. More information are available from the ITEBE website (www.itebe.org) where information of this network will be housed (with links towards websites of other organizations, such as ENDA at Dakar for the francophone countries www.enda.sn/energie etc).”

Bioenergy World Americas presented the first opportunity to organize "Oleasilva". The decision to launch this group was taken at the International Biomass Conference in Paris, in September 2005, by Ashawani Kumar Professor at the University of Jaipur in Rajasthan from India, and by Arthur Riedacker Directeur de Recherche at INRA (National Agronomical Research Organization) in France, Paris and administrator of ITEBE (www.itebe.org).
